The premier bull riding organization in the world began as a dream of 20 bull riders 23 years ago when the riders broke away from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and started a circuit for bull riders only. In little more than just two decades, the dream of those 20 bull riders has become a global sports phenomenon. PBR broadcasts reach more than half a billion households in 50 nations and territories around the world, and more than 2.5 million fans attend live events each year. In April 2007, the PBR partnered with Spire Capital (a leading media private equity firm), and is currently owned by Spire, management and the cowboys.
PBR has experienced tremendous levels of success and growth, both in its business operations and the sport over the last 22 years, and it is poised to continue on this trajectory. Today the league is one of the fastest growing sports in North America boasting a fan base of 24+ million.
In 2006, the PBR began operating international tours in Brazil, Canada, Australia and Mexico each of which has significant expansion plans in the future.
More than 600 bull riders from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Australia hold PBR memberships and compete in more than 300 owned and sanctioned PBR bull riding competitions domestically and abroad. The North American operations are composed of three primary tours: the leading Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS), the BlueDEF Velocity Tour (BDVT) and the Touring Pro Division. In 2015, the BFTS Series features 27 stops in 19 states. The season will conclude at the Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 21-25, where the PBR World Champion will be crowned, receiving the coveted championship buckle valued at more than $10,000 and a $1 million bonus.
PBR’s corporate sponsors include Ford, Wrangler, Stanley, Cooper Tires, Jack Daniel's, Dickies, the city of Las Vegas and many others, which have brought great recognition and expanded attention to the sport. There are significant initiatives underway to further its sponsor base and provide greater mediums of recognition to its partners through television, digital media, print and other initiatives.
The Built Ford Tough Series is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network and networks around the world. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
